This week, Switzerland-based company Xilva launched the Xilva MONITOR—a new tool that flags and mitigates risks in forest and nature-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) portfolios.
Through this tool, investors in nature-based and forest CDR initiatives can now follow project performance and milestones while also receiving insights on any potential threats, along with expert guidance on addressing them.
Global investments in nature-based CDR currently exceed $200 billion on an annual basis, and the booming cohort of investors supporting such projects are in need of enhanced certainty and transparency around the projects they choose to back.
The Xilva MONITOR answers the need for a more granular project perspective for investors, signaling weak links and improvement areas and hedging against risks of greenwashing, underperformance, or reputation damage.
The system combines data from satellite imagery, reports on project performance, and information from government watch lists to pinpoint emerging risks early on.
As users of the Xilva MONITOR, investors receive detailed and structured project progress reports, alerts, and expert advice on taking action in alignment with their project partners.
Based on Xilva’s GRADE framework, the MONITOR tool takes an extensive, 360° view of project risks classified in six key categories: Impact, Financial Viability, Leadership & Team, Project Design, ESG Safeguards, and Growth Potential.
This comprehensive analysis enables the Xilva MONITOR to deliver regular progress reports across all six categories, signaling for risks ranging from environmental hazards to compliance or reputational issues.

The tool also provides a risk ledger that combines all data on risks and mitigation progress, and it offers direct contact with Xilva experts that deliver case-relevant advice on solutions.
Jamie Lawrence, co-founder and Head, Forests at Xilva, stated, “Risk-free nature-based investments are a myth. Well-structured risk mitigation and clear accountability are not. With Xilva MONITOR, we can track performance against agreed mitigation measures that reduce delivery risk.”
Co-founder and CEO Tim Duehrkoop added, “Investing in nature is essential for fighting climate change and biodiversity loss, but without robust monitoring, investors are exposed.”
“With Xilva MONITOR, we give investors peace of mind by making risks visible early, keeping track of mitigation measures, and ensuring their investments deliver real impact.”
